Here is a general breakdown of what the Ebola Outbreak is:

What is Ebola?

The Ebola virus disease is a fairly new outbreak that affects humans and other primates caused by four different kinds of Ebolaviruses. Was it recently discovered? The disease was first identified in 1976, so it isn't too recent; however, the biggest outbreak of the disease has occurred as of the last month in the region West African including countries like Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The viruses are contagious and the fatality rate is incredibly high. As of now, the disease is still spreading around that specific region.

Has a cure or treatment been discovered as of yet?

Unfortunately, no as of the moment. No vaccine has been discovered for the timebeing either.

Some treatments such as the following below are performed to help lower the fever:

WebMD.com wrote:
Treatment includes an experimental serum that destroys infected cells.

Doctors manage the symptoms of Ebola with:

*Fluids and electrolytes
*Oxygen
*Blood pressure medication
*Blood transfusions
*Treatment for other infections

Symptoms and signs?

WHO Factsheet wrote:EVD is a severe acute viral illness often characterized by the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding. Laboratory findings include low white blood cell and platelet counts and elevated liver enzymes.

People are infectious as long as their blood and secretions contain the virus. Ebola virus was isolated from semen 61 days after onset of illness in a man who was infected in a laboratory.

The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms, is 2 to 21 days.

Transmission of the disease?

WHO Factsheet wrote:Ebola is introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals. In Africa, infection has been documented through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines found ill or dead or in the rainforest.

Ebola then spreads in the community through human-to-human transmission, with infection resulting from direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes) with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and indirect contact with environments contaminated with such fluids. Burial ceremonies in which mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased person can also play a role in the transmission of Ebola. Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery from illness.

Current fatality rate?

It's difficult to predict the exact rate; however, it's been mentioned to be over the thousands. According to this source, the current rate as of September 5th, 2014 is 2,097 deaths out of 3,944 known cases. [1] Fatality rate is said to approximated at 90% for those infected by the disease. [2]

Areas most affected by Ebola?

As of now, the following countries within West Africa are reported to having the higher death tolls: Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Is it being controlled?

So far, the countries affected by Ebola are being heavily monitored and there are proposals to perform lockdowns in Sierra Leone (basically preventing people in the country to leave their homes for a certain amount of days) so the disease can be controlled as well as the possibility of discovering a vaccine or treatment for Ebola. Though whether a lockdown could truly help the outbreak is really debatable...

The Ebola virus disease outbreak is probably one of the more frequently talked about topics presented in the local news as of now. It's not a small matter as the outbreak has claimed MANY lives within a month from when it first spread into this outbreak.

While the Ebolaviruses haven't spread in large numbers to other parts of the world, we must still be wary of what the disease can do and how harmful it can be. It might seem scary, but the truth is that the outbreak is indeed very frightening. The symptoms truly are horrifying.

I will update this thread with more information as it comes by. I thought it would be nice to make a factsheet of this outbreak to help others to understand what the whole situation of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) is.

Thanks for reading.

Update: A survivor that was infected from Ebola has transferred his blood to the nurse that was infected by Ebola, no information has been heard.

3 Cases has been reported in the USA, all in Dallas, Texas.

The 1st was a person named Thomas Eric Duncan who brought the virus all the way from Nigeria. He soon died last week. Now, the nurse that cared for him has Ebola the next day. Yesterday, another nurse has been tested positive for Ebola. Ebola has started spreading in Dallas, and we have no idea what will happen to North America.

In Spain, a Spanish Nurse was infected with Ebola and is in seriously condition.

So far, the virus has spread outside of West Africa. Many people in America are getting this so called Ebola "Scare". I'm not clearly sure if it's true or not, but I'm positive that they are probably negative for Ebola. Let's hope these people who are infected to be in a well condition.

People are certainly becoming very fearful of the outbreak at this point of time, and this fear seems to be worse than the disease itself.

At the moment, WHO reports that there are  almost 4500 deaths caused by Ebola so far.

I personally think that flights going to western Africa and from it should be controlled until the Ebola situation is stabilized...

I hope the two nurses that have become infected by Ebola are treated very well and cured. They've done such a brave task of trying to help Duncan too. So far the first nurse who became infected in Dallas, Nina Pham, reports to be doing well as of today. Let's hope for the best everyone.

Yeah this is bad. Honestly it scares me. I just think it would be able to spread so easy. I hope they can keep the people we know who has it under quarantine so it doesn't spread. The more who get it means the more it'll spread, meaning more die.

But yeah hopefully we get it under control.

Also thanks for all this info. Very neat and informative

No problem Will, and thanks for the video Gira.

I'll have to update the lead post soon with the current information about the outbreak. I'll probably do that sometime this week.

At least the nurse who was affected by Ebola seems to be put into the "good" status so far while the Spanish nurse who contracted it seems to be cured.

Vaccines apparently are under way to being tested on patients, so let's hope for the best.

I wish they'd give the vaccines to people throughout Africa! Why do the Americans get care but the people in Africa don't? Hmm.

^I honestly have no idea. But once the disease came to America, the awareness of Ebola suddenly skyrocketed due to the amount of fear it generated.

Amazing how the patients outside of Africa are being treated rather well; yet, those in Africa are dying in such shaking numbers... I really hope a proper vaccine is distributed soon.

Tbh, it seems like the disease can be controlled; however, very little is being done in proper treatment within Africa itself. I agree, that it isn't fair for the Africans in this case.

Agreed.

Seems like news on Ebola has slowed down though I expect Africa is still suffering heavily. People in the NA media seem to make a big deal about Ebola to generate fear here. :/

Hopefully the vaccine is actually shipped to Africa soon. Those people really need the treatment asap.

UPDATE:

As of today, Nina Pham, the first nurse who was infected in Dallas by Ebola, has made a complete recovery and has been discharged from the hospital as Ebola-free.

She has also been reunited with her dog who was quarantined over the last 21 days in case of Ebola.

This is indeed great news and it goes to show that Ebola is indeed treatable and even curable.
